Theodosia's Bed &
Breakfast Inn is located on the
front row of the 10 acre Bald Head Island Harbor facing the
mouth of the Cape Fear River. The Bed and Breakfast Inn is one of the
first structures one sees upon entering the harbor by ferry boat. While
the Bald Head Island Harbor "urban" code provides a rigid framework in
which to design, the Owners wished to have a graceful, whimsical,
island home for their bed and breakfast. There was a practical need as
well to provide as many rentable rooms as possible on the small lot so
that the project
could be financially successful.
The Architect's design provides for eight rooms in the main house and
two rooms in the carriage house which opens to Brinkmans Alley in the
back. Each room opens out to its own porch or balcony giving
opportunity for the outdoor connection, panoramic views, and egress.
Care was taken to create the feeling of a large house rather than a
commercial structure. The mass of the structure is lessened by use of
gables, porches, dormers and the smaller carriage house in the back.
Ornamental features such as gable brackets and curved porches
contribute to a more playful, architectural character. Inside, the
Owners have used their talents to create rooms with individual
character using colors and furnishings which enhance the island bed
& breakfast experience.
In a departure from the usual gray and white trimmed structures in the
Harbor, a color palette was used for the exterior which includes more
dramatic colors reminiscent of the Victorian Era. |
